According to sources cited by the newspaper, the deal would allow for a long-term US military presence in the country

NEW YORK, November 4. /TASS/. The administration of US President Donald Trump is negotiating an agreement with Venezuela that would allow for a long-term US military presence in the country, The New York Times (NYT) reported, citing sources.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is leading efforts to conclude a military pact, known as a status of forces agreement, according to the report. All details regarding the long-term military presence and the locations where forces will be stationed will be worked out in subsequent agreements, the newspaper said.

At the same time, it remains unclear whether the United States intends to build and maintain its military bases in the country or to station troops at existing Venezuelan bases, according to the publication.

Washington hopes to expand security cooperation with Venezuela, an unnamed State Department official said, adding that no discussions regarding bases are currently taking place.
