Kallas may be among greatest disappointments in EU history — newspaper

The EU foreign policy chief has not taken part in any negotiations with Russia regarding the Ukrainian issue, Berliner Zeitung columnist Nicholas Butylin noted

BERLIN, October 29. /TASS/. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has become one of the biggest disappointments in the bloc’s history, having participated in no talks with Russia on Ukraine, Berliner Zeitung columnist Nicolas Butylin wrote.

Throughout the various stages of negotiations, "no one in Moscow, Washington or Beijing showed any interest in her," he noted. "Kallas played no part in this entire process, either as a participant or as someone initiating contact. Yet just six weeks ago, Kallas said in an interview with Finnish broadcaster Yle that she would answer a call from [Russian President] Vladimir Putin or Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov if one came."

Butylin said that in the same interview, Kallas "admitted her own unsuitability for this diplomatic task," stating that she "cannot act as a full-fledged mediator because the West supports Ukraine." For that reason, "Kallas should not be surprised that others are doing the job for her," he concluded.
