West’s scheme to isolate Russia, plunge it into economic ruin doomed to failure — Medvedev

Given the present-day situation, what’s needed is to make every effort to provide for the Russian economy’s stable development, the Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman pointed out

MOSCOW, June 3. /TASS/. Western countries are trying to isolate Russia and push it toward economic collapse, but their plans are doomed to fail, Deputy Chairman of Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said on Friday.

"The hostile policy of Western states towards our country has obvious goals, that being, to isolate Russia and cut off all of the possible channels of cooperation with other countries and to drive us into an economic meltdown. These plans won’t come to fruition," Medvedev emphasized, speaking at an event to mark the 30th anniversary of the Russian Security Council, which is celebrated on June 3.

He noted that given the present-day situation, what’s needed is to make every effort to provide for the Russian economy’s stable development, as well as for the prosperity and security of the country’s citizens. "The role of the Russian Security Council regarding this large-scale work on this score can be hardly overestimated."

Medvedev pointed out that activities of the Russian Security Council, which was established according to the presidential decree of June 3, 1992, "posed a particular significance for the all-embracing development and strengthening of the country, as well as for the protection of its national interests" at every stage in the history of modern-day Russia.

"Over the past three decades, the Russian Security Council made a hefty contribution to shaping the present security architecture," he continued. "Today, under extremely complicated and contradictory times, its activities [of the Russian Security Council] assume a particular importance in providing a prompt response to fundamental threats."

"The most important is to work towards preventing them [fundamental threats]," Medvedev added.

Russia’s Security Council

Russia’s Security Council is celebrating its 30th anniversary on June 3. This institution is directly subordinate to the president of Russia: it shapes national security policy, forecasts and analyzes threats, works out proposals for the head of state and coordinates the work of other state agencies in this sphere.

As information on the Kremlin’s website suggests, the Security Council is a constitutional deliberative body under the president of Russia. The secretary of the Security Council provides for its activity and administers its staff. Nikolay Patrushev has been the secretary of Russia’s Security Council since 2008.

The president of Russia who is chairman of the Security Council holds weekly meetings with its members to discuss essential issues related to both internal and international aspects of the country’s security.
