Russia to respond to any cases of vessel seizures in Baltic Sea — MFA

Maria Zakharova emphasized that any potential acts of seizure of vessels linked to Russia cannot be legally viewed as acts of piracy

MOSCOW, February 14. /TASS/. Russia will observe the situation surrounding maritime traffic in the Baltic Sea and respond to any specific case of detention or inspection of ships there or anywhere else in the World Ocean, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing.

She emphasized that any potential acts of seizure of vessels linked to Russia cannot be legally viewed as acts of piracy. "They will represent a violation of the norms of international maritime law regarding freedom of maritime navigation," the diplomat clarified.

"The detainment of foreign vessels, their inspection, and arrest outside of territorial waters are possible only under a specific set of reasons," the spokeswoman noted. "Interference in maritime traffic under other pretexts is unlawful. Therefore, <…> we will observe the situation unfolding in the Baltic Sea and other parts of the World Ocean and react accordingly."
