Positive Technologies on trail of new hacker group targeting state entities in Russia, CIS

It is reported that as of today, 867 employee accounts have been compromised

MOSCOW, April 4. /TASS/. Cybersecurity firm Positive Technologies has identified a group of hackers targeting government and financial entities in Russia and CIS countries, dubbing them Lazy Koala, the company told TASS.

"As part of threat research, specialists at PT ESC have discovered a series of attacks aimed at entities from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Armenia. Government and financial businesses, as well as medical and educational enterprises from the mentioned countries have fallen victim to the attacks," the company said.

As of today, 867 employee accounts have been compromised, Positive Technologies added.

The criminals are mostly trying to hack into the computers of government employees. "The criminals probably intend to use this information in further attacks on the infrastructure of companies. The stolen data may also be sold on the dark market of cyberservices," experts noted.

Positive Technologies dubbed the group Lazy Koala as it uses very basic techniques and because one of its members, who managed Telegram bots with stolen data, goes by the name Koala. The company has not been able to find any links between this group and any others currently operating and using the same techniques.
