MOSCOW, March 1. /TASS/. Russia is not planning to put nuclear weapons in space, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at an ad hoc Security Council meeting.

"You and I have already discussed fake news by some Western officials that we are allegedly planning to deploy nuclear weapons in space. I say `allegedly’ because we have no such plans, as I have already said and as we well know," the Russian leader emphasized.

However, space issues and efforts to neutralize threats that may emerge in the space sphere should constantly be in the spotlight of the government, Putin continued before giving the floor to Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu.

The meeting was also attended by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, the speakers of the lower house of Russia’s parliament, the State Duma, and the Federation Council, or the upper chamber, Vyacheslav Volodin and Valentina Matviyenko, respectively, Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev, Federal Security Service (FSB) Director Alexander Bortnikov, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) chief, Sergey Naryshkin, and other senior officials.
