BRUSSELS, January 14. /TASS/. European leaders are trying to come up with a deal on Greenland’s future that would allow US President Donald Trump to claim victory on this issue, Politico reported, citing diplomats.

According to the newspaper, the discussion intensified amid Trump’s recent statements that the US "needs" Greenland and does not rule out seizing it by force.

Politico noted that European leaders prefer rapprochement to confrontation with the US president and are considering ways to strengthen security in the Arctic region within the framework of NATO, as well as granting the US concessions on mineral extraction.

On Wednesday, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and his Greenlandic counterpart Vivian Motzfeldt will meet with US State Secretary Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance at the White House.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated the need for Greenland to join the US. During his first presidential term, he proposed buying the island, and in March 2025, he expressed confidence that it could be annexed.

Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark. In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen signed a defense treaty in addition to their NATO alliance commitments. Under the treaty, the US undertook to defend the island from potential aggression.
