China plans to hold a meeting of the Friends for Peace Group on Ukraine in the near future to assess the situation, China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Fu Cong told a news conference on his country’s presidency of the UN Security Council in February.
"We are thinking about having another meeting to evaluate the current situation. We know there are many things that are afoot concerning this issue, and there are many ideas and proposals we are very glad to see. As far as I can see, there are expressions of willingness to have a peace negotiation on both sides. And so we do hope that this can materialize and materialize soon, and we'll first evaluate the situation, and secondly, we'll see if there is a useful role for the platform, for this group to play in order to facilitate this peace dialog," he said.
He recalled that two meetings of the group had already been held, one at the ministerial level and the other one at the level of UN envoys.
At a meeting with Brazilian president’s special envoy Celso Amorim in September 2024, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced the establishment of the Friends for Peace Group by China. Brazil and other countries of the global South. The objective of this initiative is to promote peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.
