MOSCOW, March 7. /TASS/. US astronaut Sunita Williams will hand over the command of the International Space Station (ISS) to Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin, Russia’s state-run space corporation Roscosmos said.
"Today, Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin will assume command of the International Space Station from astronaut Sunita Williams," the corporation said in a statement.
The duty of the ISS commander - the person, who is responsible for compliance with the flight program and overall flight safety - was introduced in 2000. In case of an emergency situation, it is the commander’s duty to inform mission control centers in Russia’s Korolev and US Houston.
Ovchinin will become Russia’s 34th ISS commander.
