Fire at Yandex data center, 399 UAVs: aftermath of attacks on Russian regions

According to Russian Defense Ministry, Ukrainian drones were downed over 21 Russian regions

MOSCOW, October 8. /TASS/. Air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 399 Ukrainian drones over Russian regions and the Black Sea overnight, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported.

A drone attack caused a fire at a data center operated by Russia’s tech giant Yandex in the town of Sasovo in the country’s central Ryazan Region, damaging part of the facility’s infrastructure.

Drone debris fell on the territory of an enterprise in Russia’s southern city of Krasnodar, causing a fire.

A fire also broke out in the industrial zone in the city of Salavat in Russia’s central Bashkortostan Region as a result of falling drone debris after an attack was repelled.

TASS has compiled the main details about the aftermath.

Attack scale

- On-duty air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 399 Ukrainian fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over Russian regions between 8:00 p.m. Moscow time (5:00 p.m. GMT) on October 7 and 8:00 a.m. Moscow time (5:00 a.m. GMT) on October 8, the Defense Ministry reported.

- According to the ministry, drones were downed over the Belgorod, Bryansk, Volgograd, Voronezh, Kursk, Lipetsk, Oryol, Orenburg, Penza, Rostov, Ryazan, Samara, Saratov, Smolensk, Tambov, Tula, Ulyanovsk, Moscow, Bashkortostan and Tatarstan Regions, the Republic of Crimea and the waters of the Black Sea.

- More than 30 UAVs were destroyed overnight over the town of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, the Kamensky, Millerovsky, Neklinovsky, Chertkovsky and Sholokhovsky Districts of the Rostov Region, Governor Yury Slyusar said on his Max channel.

- Air defense systems shot down 26 Ukrainian drones over the Voronezh Region overnight, Governor Alexander Gusev wrote in a post on his Max channel.

- Air defense forces intercepted two drones over the Ryazan Region overnight, Governor Pavel Malkov said on his Max channel.

Aftermath in Ryazan Region

- A drone attack caused a fire at a data center operated by Russia’s tech giant Yandex in the town of Sasovo in the Ryazan Region, damaging part of the facility’s infrastructure, the company’s press service told TASS.

- There were no casualties, with special services carrying out cleanup operations on site.

- The data center’s operations have been fully suspended, and some Yandex services may be unavailable to users.

- Earlier, the Yandex Cloud Telegram channel, used to promptly notify users about service outages and their recovery, reported that power supply issues were affecting the ru-central1-b availability zone.

- The company said that as of 8:26 a.m. Moscow time (5:26 a.m. GMT), the ru-central1-b zone was still unavailable, while all necessary work to transfer the load to other availability zones had been completed.

- Creating new resources in the cloud infrastructure may currently be limited, with specialists still working to address the consequences of the incident.

- All services in other zones are running normally.

- A drone attack caused a fire on the roof of an enterprise in the Sasovsky District of the Ryazan Region, Governor Pavel Malkov reported on his Max channel.

- Windows were also shattered in several private houses.

- There have been no casualties reported so far.

- Emergency services are operating on site.

Other regions

- A fire broke out in the industrial zone in the city of Salavat in the Bashkortostan Region as a result of falling UAV debris after an attack was repelled, Mayor Marat Zagidullin said on his Max channel.

- Emergency services are working on site.

- The affected enterprise remains operational.

- There were no casualties.

- Drone debris fell on the territory of an enterprise in the city of Krasnodar, the regional emergency response center reported on its Telegram channel.
