LONDON, February 5. /TASS/. Resettlement of Palestinians from Gaza, an idea proposed by US President Donald Trump, could create another catastrophe in the Middle East, according to an opinion piece published by the Financial Times.
It is unclear where the Palestinians would go, the piece said. No Arab country would dare to accept them and be seen complicit with the forcible displacement.
The bitter legacy of Nakba, or catastrophe, of 1948, when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forced from their homes remains raw across the Muslim world, according to the piece.
Nobody in the region, with the exception of Israel’s far right, would want a repeat of that, the piece said.
On February 4, Trump said at a joint news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, following their talks at the White House, that the US was considering long-term ownership of the Gaza Strip in order to develop it for the sake of peace in the Middle East. Also, he proposed resettling Palestinians from the enclave to other countries in the region, which he said could pay for it. Trump also indicated that the US is ready to send its troops to Gaza if need be.
