Israeli cabinet approves US-proposed Lebanese ceasefire plan

TEL-AVIV, November 27. /TASS/. Israel has officially accepted the US-proposed plan of a ceasefire in Lebanon, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyuahu announced.

"Tonight, the war cabinet approved the US proposal on a ceasefire in Lebanon. The decision was backed by ten ministers; one was against," the premier’s office said.

He commended Washington’s contribution into the peace process, adding that Israel "retains its right to respond to any security threat."

According to The Times of Israel, the only person who voted against was Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. The minister, who is also the leader of the far-right Otzma Yehudit party, earlier criticized the ceasefire with Lebanon, calling it a ‘historic mistake.’

On Tuesday night, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a special televised address that he will submit a plan for a ceasefire in Lebanon to the war cabinet. He expressed confidence that the military campaign against Hezbollah set the group decades back in terms of military capabilities. Israeli forces killed Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrullah, some other leaders, destroyed most of their weapons, thousands of fighters and key infrastructure, the prime minister said.

According to Netanyahu, Israel will "strictly honor the agreement and react harshly to any violations." He said a ceasefire would give Israel a chance to focus on the Iranian threat, restock weapons and rebuild troops, and isolate the remaining Hamas forces in Gaza.
