Over 80 election commissioners work to death in Indonesia's presidential election

A total of about 5 million volunteers worked at polling stations and helped count votes

TOKYO, February 20. /TASS/. A total of 84 members of Indonesia's election commissions have died of fatigue after working in the presidential election held on February 14, with more than 4,500 others needing medical treatment, Detik portal reported.

"A total of 84 people have died so far," the portal quoted Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin as saying. According to the General Election Commission, some 4,567 election commissioners have fallen ill so far. The deaths and illnesses of election workers were due to fatigue and overwork.

The past election took dozens of lives despite the Indonesian government imposing an age limit on election commissioners and requiring them to undergo medical examinations. The 2019 election caused the deaths of more than 500 workers, the portal said.

More than 204 million people in Indonesia are eligible to vote. More than 820,000 polling stations were opened across the country. President-elect Prabowo Subianto will take office in October.
