Russia’s governing hockey body appeals IIHF’s ban on national teams with CAS

On July 30, the IIHF announced a decision to extend Russia’s suspension from international tournaments until 2027

MOSCOW, September 1. /TASS/. The Russian Ice Hockey Federation (RHF) has filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne against the decision of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) to extend the suspension of Russian national teams, the RHF press office announced in a statement on Tuesday.

"The Russian Ice Hockey Federation appealed the decisions of the International Ice Hockey Federation to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne," the statement reads.

"In order to settle the dispute promptly and after reaching an agreement with the international federation on all necessary conditions for applying to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the RHF submitted the full text of the complaint directly to CAS on August 31," the statement from the RHF continued.

"The agreement with the IIHF stipulates that the hearing on the case will take place at the end of October 2026, and the regulatory part of the decision will be announced shortly thereafter," according to the RHF. "If CAS decides to clear Russian teams to participate in the world championships, this decision will be binding on the IIHF."

In February 2022, the IIHF suspended Russia and Belarus from participation in international competitions over the developments in Ukraine.

The Russian national ice hockey teams were also barred from the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Italy and IIHF President Luc Tardif told TASS in 2025 that the decision was made by the IOC and the IIHF had no say in this.

On July 30, the International Ice Hockey Federation announced a decision to extend Russia’s suspension from international tournaments until 2027. The IIHF stated that: "Following the IIHF Disciplinary Board Decision, the IIHF Council re-analyzed the Russian Ice Hockey Federation’s request that it be permitted to enter a Russian Team in each of the following IIHF Championships: IIHF Men’s World Championship 2027; IIHF Women’s World Championship 2027; IIHF World Junior Championship 2027; IIHF U18 Men’s World Championship 202; and IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship 2027.".
