Russia’s mass media watchdog blocks access to Facebook in Russia

According to the watchdog, twenty-six cases of discrimination of Russian media and information resources by Facebook have been registered since October 2020

MOSCOW, March 4. /TASS/. Russia’s mass media watchdog, Roskomnadzor, said on Friday it has blocked Facebook, a social network owned by Meta, in Russia.

"On March 4, 2022, it was decided to block access to the Facebook network (owned by Meta Platforms, Inc.) on Russia’s territory," it said in press statement posted on its website.

According to the watchdog, twenty-six cases of discrimination of Russian media and information resources by Facebook have been registered since October 2020. In recent days, the network has blocked access to the accounts of the Zvezda television channel, RIA Novosti, Sputnik, and Russia Today news agencies, Lenta.ru and Gazeta.ru online media outlets.

On February 25, Roskomnadzor said it was beginning to slow down Facebook’s traffic in Russia, since the network failed to unblock the accounts of four Russian media, which were blocked on February 23. The watchdog demanded Meta Platforms lift its restrictions and explain why they had been imposed.
