NAIROBI, October 29. /TASS/. Russia may launch Tanzania’s first Earth observation satellite into orbit in March 2027, according to the Ugandan news portal ChimpReports.
The spacecraft is scheduled to be launched using a Russian carrier rocket, the portal reported.
On October 28, Russia’s Roscosmos State Space Corporation and the Tanzanian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology signed a framework memorandum on strategic partnership and cooperation in the space sector on the sidelines of the third Russia-Africa Summit. The document provides for the joint development and launch of satellites, the creation of ground infrastructure for receiving space data, and the training of specialists. Russia also intends to assist Tanzania in establishing a national space agency.
Earlier, Roscosmos CEO Dmitry Bakanov reported that Tanzania is interested in building its own spacecraft and launching them into orbit using Russian carrier rockets. The Russian side also offered opportunities for Tanzanian students to study at specialized Russian universities, including programs involving the development and launch of student satellites.
According to the portal, Earth observation satellites are used to monitor agricultural production, forests, water resources, mineral deposits and environmental changes.
