‘Invitation to disaster’ — Lavrov on US politicians mulling surgical nuclear strikes

The top Russian diplomat noted that earlier, US National Security Council Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby said that the Americans do not want any escalation while their European allies will suffer if nuclear weapons are used

MOSCOW, December 6. /TASS/. US politicians talking about the possibility of surgical nuclear strikes is an invitation to a catastrophe, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with noted US journalist Tucker Carlson.

The top Russian diplomat noted that earlier, US National Security Council (NSC) Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby, noted that the Americans do not want any escalation while their European allies will suffer if nuclear weapons are used. "So even mentally, he excludes that the United States can suffer," Lavrov pointed out. "And this is something which makes the situation a bit risky. It might - if this mentality prevails, then some reckless steps would be taken, and this is bad," he added.

Replying to a question as to whether American policy makers imagine there could be a nuclear exchange that doesn't directly affect the United States, which in Lavrov’s opinion is not true, the Russian foreign minister said: "That's what I said, yes. But professionals in deterrence, nuclear deterrence policy, they know very well that it's a very dangerous game. And to speak about limited exchange of nuclear strikes is an invitation to disaster, which we don't want to have."
