Moldova aware of Russia’s red lines under Transnistria issue, diplomat says

The issue of the Transnistrian settlement is invariably on the agenda of Russia’s dialogue with the Moldovan side

MOSCOW, October 9. /TASS/. Chisinau is well aware of Moscow’s position and its red lines under the Transnistrian issue, Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Second Department of CIS Countries Alexey Polishchuk told TASS on Sunday.

"Chisinau is well aware of Russia’s position on this [Transnistrian] issue, which we have repeatedly brought to its notice, including principal red lines for us," the high-ranking diplomat said.

As Polishchuk stressed, "the issue of the Transnistrian settlement, including such an important component as the peacekeeping mission in the Dniester area, is invariably on the agenda" of Russia’s dialogue with the Moldovan side.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a meeting with students and teaching staff of MGIMO University on September 1 that "any actions threatening the security of Russian peacekeepers in the unrecognized Transnistrian republic will be qualified as an attack on Russia."

The Transnistrian Republic was proclaimed on September 2, 1990, on the left bank of the Dniester River and has a predominantly Russian-speaking population. The region’s residents opposed radical Moldovan politicians who sought the republic’s secession from the USSR and its unification with Romania at that time.
