SEVEROMORSK, June 1. /TASS/. Russia’s Northern Fleet will give an adequate response to the US and NATO mounting military activity in Europe’s Arctic region, Fleet Commander Admiral Alexander Moiseyev said on Wednesday.
"The US and NATO mounting military activity in the European North considerably impacts regional stability. The United States is clearly set for confrontation with Russia, implementing the intents of the alliance’s expansion. The accession by Finland and Sweden to NATO is a proof of that. All these factors cannot but concern us. We must take adequate measures and there are no doubts that they will be taken," the admiral said aboard the heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Velikiy.
In the admiral’s assessment, the military and political situation in the Arctic is characterized by further expansion of the scope of foreign military presence and the rising intensity of operational and combat training of the US and allied NATO forces aimed at deterring Russia in the region, which have than doubled in the past seven years.
From December 2021 to May 2022, national armed forces of NATO member states and allied forces held at least nine operational and combat training measures in the region, the admiral said.
NATO’s activity in Arctic
The Cold Response 2022 drills held by Norway together with NATO allies and partners became the most massive military exercise in the Polar Region over the past 30 years, the Northern Fleet commander said. The military exercise brought together 38 surface ships, submarines and auxiliary vessels, up to 150 aircraft and about 38,000 troops. The UK Navy’s carrier strike group led by the multi-purpose aircraft carrier Prince of Wales participated in the exercise for the first time, he added.
A US amphibious assault group made up of the flagship, multi-purpose amphibious assault ship Kearsarge, the dock landing ship G. Hall and an expeditionary battalion of marine corps operated in the Polar Region in April-May for the first time as part of combat duty, the admiral said. The US land component (marine infantry and the Airborne Force) operates a reinforced force of up to 800 personnel on a regular basis, he added.
Also, US strategic bombers regular conduct demonstration flights over the waters of the Norwegian and Greenland Seas on a regular basis, the Russian Northern Fleet commander said.
