US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the possibility of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US leader Donald Trump on the sidelines of the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in China during a brief conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Atlanta, Georgia.

"We didn't have a meeting. We spoke," Rubio said at a press conference following the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Atlanta.

"We spoke just briefly about the opportunity for our leaders to potentially interact at APEC next month," he said, adding that there had been no firm commitments regarding the G20 summit.
