Europe’s security cannot be guaranteed without Russia — top Hungarian diplomat

Peter Szijjarto emphasized that Europe’s new security framework cannot be established without Moscow

BUDAPEST, March 7. /TASS/. Europe’s security cannot be guaranteed without considering Russia’s position, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said, adding that Russia poses no threat to any of the NATO countries.

He emphasized that Europe’s new security framework cannot be established without Moscow. "It would be a mistake to assume that lasting security in Europe can be achieved by excluding Russia from discussions on this issue," the MTI agency quoted him as saying.

Echoing Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s remarks, the senior Hungarian diplomat underlined that the European Union will not be able to continue military support to Ukraine while the United States has opted for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. According to him, the European Union would be unable to provide additional military aid to Ukraine even if it were in its strongest economic condition. If the EU leaders’ plans on this issue are carried out, it would result in a "massive economic crisis for Europe," he warned.

At the EU summit on March 6, Hungary declined to support the joint statement on Ukraine. The statement, approved by 26 EU members, will be revisited at the next summit on March 21 and 22. As stated in the document, the European Union is prepared to continue offering all forms of assistance, including military, to Ukraine and will maintain pressure on Russia, including through sanctions.
