WASHINGTON, February 22. /TASS/. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a phone conversation with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga has emphasized that Washington is taking measures at the UN in order to settle the Ukraine conflict, Tammy Bruce, a spokeswoman for the US Department of State, said in a written statement.
According to her, Rubio reaffirmed "President Trump’s commitment to ending the conflict in Ukraine, including through effective action in the United Nations Security Council."
Earlier, the Washington Post said, citing sources, that the US administration had demanded that Kiev withdraw its draft resolution to the UN General Assembly condemning Russia for its special military operation and the Ukrainian side refused.
According to the newspaper’s sources, "the Trump administration has asked Ukraine to withdraw an annual resolution condemning" Russia’s special military operation, "and wants to replace it with a toned-down US statement that was perceived as being close to pro-Russian in Kiev."
The newspaper stressed that the "suggestion stunned Kiev, which refused to withdraw its resolution." It is expected that the Ukrainian side will submit it on Monday.
Earlier, Rubio said that the United States will submit its own draft resolution on the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine to the UN General Assembly on February 24. According to him, on Monday, Washington "will propose to the United Nations a landmark resolution the entire UN membership should support in order to chart a path to peace." Rubio also pointed out that US President Donald Trump is "committed to ending" the Ukraine conflict.
Commenting on the information that the US chose not to co-sponsor a draft of an anti-Russian resolution on Ukraine at the UN General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said: "This shows that the Trump administration’s policy is pragmatic at its core. At meetings with some countries’ leaders, definitely during the meeting with the Indian prime minister, and, most likely, in his interaction with other representatives of the global majority, he has been emphasizing that his guiding principle is common sense," the top Russian diplomat noted.
