NEW YORK, February 29. /TASS/. Former US President Donald Trump has been removed from the presidential primary ballot in the state of Illinois, CNN reported.

The decision, issued by Cook County Circuit Judge Tracie R. Porter, is based on Section Three of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution. The amendment bans anyone who swore an oath to support the Constitution and then "engaged in insurrection" against it from holding future office. The amendment was ratified after the Civil War of 1861-65 in order to restrict the rights of politicians from the South.

However, the ruling was put on hold pending an appeal.

In late January, the Illinois State Board of Elections unanimously turned down a motion demanding Trump be removed from the ballot, saying it has no authority to do so.

On January 6, 2021, supporters of the then Trump administration sought to overturn the Congress’ certification of the November 2020 presidential election results. Democrat Joe Biden won the election.

The United States will hold its presidential election in November 2024. Incumbent US President Joe Biden officially launched his candidacy to seek a second White House term in late April. Former US President Donald Trump announced his plans to seek re-election in November 2022.
