Armenia, having applied for EU membership, to face contradictions in EAEU — Kremlin

According to Dmitry Peskov, Armenia will need to initiate a comprehensive process of aligning its legislation with European standards across various sectors

MOSCOW, August 24. /TASS/. Following Armenia’s application for European Union membership, Yerevan is poised to face significant contradictions within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), a development that could ultimately prove detrimental to Armenia’s interests, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov has stated.

As he emphasized, "an important aspect that our representatives, including our head of state, have highlighted, is that after submitting an application for EU membership, Armenia will need to initiate a comprehensive process of aligning its legislation across various sectors – trade, phytosanitary measures, customs, and more – with European standards. These standards are fundamentally inconsistent with those currently adopted throughout the EAEU. This discord will lead to profound contradictions, which are likely to harm Armenia most of all."

The Kremlin spokesman clarified that this is precisely why the latest EAEU summit adopted a statement in which the heads of state of the union called on Armenia to hold a corresponding referendum as soon as possible.
