BRUSSELS, May 21. /TASS/. Romanian President-elect Nicusor Dan believes that it would be inappropriate for the country to send troops to Ukraine as part of peacekeeping missions.
"First, to have a big operational support on Romanian territory, yes. To be part of the armies guaranteeing peace in Ukraine, no. I think it would not be very appropriate because of the tension that already exists between Romania and Russia," Dan said in an interview with Politico Europe.
He also criticized US President Donald Trump’s approach to resolving the Ukraine conflict and his willingness to make compromises with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. According to the Romanian president-elect, "anything on Ukraine has to be decided and agreed by the Ukrainians themselves." Meanwhile, Dan does not believe that peace in Ukraine is possible in the near future.
US Special Envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg said earlier that Washignton was discussing a plan to settle the conflict in Ukraine, which would involve deploying a deterrence force west of the Dnieper River comprising contingents from four European countries - the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Poland.
Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu warned in an interview with TASS that the deployment of the so-called peacekeepers to historical Russian lands could lead to World War III. He pointed out that the "coalition of the willing" was making plans to send a military contingent to Ukraine under the guise of peacekeepers. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has repeatedly stated that the presence of NATO troops under any flag and in any capacity on the Ukrainian soil was a threat to Russia, and Moscow would not accept this under any circumstances.
