TEL AVIV, December 11. /TASS/. Israel intends to preserve its control over all parts of Jerusalem forever and will not allow dividing it, Jewish Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said while speaking at a special session of the Knesset (parliament) on the occasion of the visit of Paraguayan President Santiago Pena, who is scheduled to open his country's embassy in the city on December 12.
"We united Jerusalem 57 years ago, and it will never be divided again. Jerusalem will forever remain united under Israeli sovereignty. If we are not here, bigots will come, bringing death and destruction throughout the Middle East. We will not allow that to happen. With God's help, Israel will keep Jerusalem united for generations to come," Netanyahu said from the parliamentary rostrum.
Jerusalem's status is one of the key issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Israelis occupied the eastern part of the city during the 1967 war and insist that Jerusalem is the integral and indivisible capital of Israel. The UN Security Council, by resolution 478 of August 20, 1980, rejected Israel's right to East Jerusalem and called on members of the world organization to withdraw their diplomatic missions from the city.
