Ukrainian parliament bans public display of letters Z and V

The law prohibits "any propaganda of the Russian regime"

KIEV, April 14. /TASS/. Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, has passed a law banning the public display of the letters Z and V, lawmaker Yaroslav Zheleznyak said on Thursday.

The law prohibits "any propaganda of the Russian regime" and Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine. The document, published on the Verkhovna Rada’s website, bans the public display of symbols associated with the Russian Armed Forces, including the letters Z and V and their equivalents in the Cyrillic alphabet.

At the same time, according to the law, these symbols may be used for "condemning the Russian regime," in media reports that don’t justify Russia’s actions, on captured military equipment and in trademarks registered before February 24, 2022.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation based on a request from the heads of the Donbass republics. The Russian leader stressed that Moscow had no plans to occupy Ukrainian territories and the goal was to demilitarize and denazify the country.
