MOSCOW, November 2. /TASS/. Germany’s Alexander Zverev has topped the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings for the first time, according to the latest standings published on the organization’s website.
Zverev reached the semifinals in Vienna last week, bringing his points tally to 9,550. A quarterfinal appearance was enough to earn him the top spot. He surpassed Italy’s Jannik Sinner (9,450), who cut short his season due to a knee injury after holding the top ranking since April. Zverev became the 30th player to reach world No. 1.
Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz (6,100), who claimed the Vienna title last week, ranks third. American Ben Shelton (4,530) holds fourth place, followed by Russia’s Daniil Medvedev (3,860), who fell to Alcaraz in the semifinals in the Austrian capital.
Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime (2,875) fell out of the top 10, slipping from seventh to 13th. His drop allowed Spain’s Rafael Jodar (3,209) to break into the top 10 for the first time. Jodar became the first player in ATP history to accomplish the feat in his debut season, having begun the year outside the top 150.
Serbia’s Novak Djokovic (3,140) climbed one place and is now within reach of returning to the top 10 despite an early departure in Basel. The men’s record holder for Grand Slam singles titles competed at the Swiss tournament for the first time in 15 years but was defeated in the second round by Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, ranked 39th in the world.
Other Russians in the top 100 include Andrey Rublev (2,085), Karen Khachanov (1,940) and Roman Safiullin (807), who occupy 22nd, 25th and 71st places, respectively.
