TOKYO, August 4. /TASS/. European karate champion Anna Chernysheva will not compete at the Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for COVID-19, the press service of the Russian Karate Federation has reported.
"Very sad news came from Japan. Our karateka Anna Chernysheva will not be able to compete at the Olympics. Her coronavirus test, which is mandatory for all participants in the Games, turned out to be positive. The confirmatory test was just as disappointing," the report said.
Chernysheva, 19, is the reigning European champion in the under 55kg category. The Tokyo Olympics are the first Games to include Karate.
According to the press release of the Olympic Games Organizing Committee published earlier, on August 4, the total number of coronavirus cases among individuals involving in the Games has hit 322.
The 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Japan’s capital of Tokyo are being held this year between July 23 and August 8. In March 2020, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to postpone the 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in Japan for one year due to the spread of COVID-19.
