WASHINGTON, November 1. /TASS/. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has accused the North Korean authorities of a massive hacker attack on the Binance cryptocurrency exchange that could have led to losses of $6.3 bln, the FBI press service said.
The FBI said that North Korea is responsible for the theft of virtual assets worth over $6 bln from the Binance cryptocurrency exchange committed on or about October 29, 2026. The statement provides no evidence. US authorities believe the attack was organized by the TraderTraitor hacker group from North Korea. According to the FBI, the hackers will convert the stolen assets primarily into the Ethereum cryptocurrency. "It is expected these assets will then be further laundered by converting them using DeFi and instant swap services as they prepare them for further laundering stages," the bureau said.
The Binance cryptocurrency exchange will allocate 50% of the funds from its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) to compensate for the losses caused by the hacker attack. The platform said earlier that it reimbursed 90% of the amount stolen during the attack.
