EU wants to exclude Russia’s pipeline oil supplies from embargo — Reuters

EU countries failed to reach a compromise on the sixth package of sanctions against Russia, which should include oil embargo

MOSCOW, May 30. /TASS/. Russian pipeline oil supplies may be excluded from the EU embargo, Reuters reported on Monday, with reference to the draft final statement of the European Union (EU) summit.

"The European Council agrees that the sixth package of sanctions against Russia will cover crude oil, as well as petroleum products, delivered from Russia into Member States, with a temporary exception for crude oil delivered by pipeline," the draft conclusions said, according to Reuters.

At the same time, the draft statement said that the EU countries would "address the issue of the temporary exception for crude oil delivered by pipeline as soon as possible".

For more than three weeks, EU countries have been unable to reach a compromise on the sixth package of sanctions against Russia, which, according to the European Commission, should include oil embargo. The European Commission proposed to ban imports of crude oil from Russia six months after the sixth package enters into force, and ban imports of oil products from 2023. Hungary opposes the oil embargo, with the support of several other countries, who believe that the damage from this measure will be catastrophic for Europe.
