ODESSA, May 11, /ITAR-TASS/. The death toll from the bloodshed in the Ukrainian Black Sea port city of Odessa has risen to 48, as a student of the Odessa National University died in hospital from a serious wound.
Earlier on Sunday, one more man, Yevgeny Losinsky, 34, died in hospital from a serious wound in the stomack. As of now, about 60 people are still in hospitals, of who ten are in grave condition.
On Saturday, the authorities made public an updated list of 43 identified victims of the May 2 tragedy in Odessa. Eight of them died of gunshot wounds, seven people jumped out of the windows from upper floors of the burning Odessa Trade Unions House, escaping from the fire and chasers, other people were burnt alive or suffocated to death in the burning building. According to the latest reports, 48 people died, more than 200 were wounded and 48 are still reported missing. Meanwhile, member of the Ukrainian parliament Oleg Tsarev, lawmaker of the Odessa regional council Vadim Savenko and other Ukrainian politicians say that the clashes took the lives of at least 116 people while the Kiev authorities are seeking to conceal the exact figures.
Rioting in Odessa began on May 2 when football fans arriving from Kharkov, eastern Ukraine, as well as activists from the radical Right Sector movement and members of the so-called Maidan self-defence forces from Kiev staged a march along city streets. The action culminated in clashes with supporters of Ukraine’s federalization, during which radical activists set fire to the regional Trade Unions House and a tent camp on Kulikovo Pole Square, where activists were collecting signatures in favour of a referendum on Ukraine’s federalization and the state status of the Russian language.
Kulikovo Pole activists already said they would be restoring a tent camp after the holidays to continue their sign-up campaign for the referendum, as a large part of gathered signatures was lost in the fire. “We want to place a tent camp after May 9. More people will be staying there,” said lawmaker of the Odessa regional council, city mayoral candidate Aleksey Albu, who was wounded in the defence of the Trade Unions House.
