NEW YORK, November 28. /TASS/. US President-elect Donald Trump’s national security adviser pick, Mike Waltz, is currently weighing in on a number of initiatives aimed at resolving the Ukrainian crisis, including a ceasefire over the period of negotiations, CNN reported citing unnamed sources.
According to the report, the future administration’s strategy on Ukraine is still in the works, but, apparently, Washington is expected to promote the idea of a ceasefire once the White House transition period is over. A truce would provide an opportunity "to freeze the conflict temporarily while both sides negotiate," CNN said.
Gen. Keith Kellogg, earlier appointed by Trump to be his special envoy to Ukraine and Russia, has already sent his own conflict settlement proposals to Waltz.
One of the options, which are now being examined by Trump’s adviser, is to allow Russia to keep the territory it holds now in exchange for Ukraine getting NATO membership. However, few people in Trump’s orbit appear eager to invite Ukraine into NATO anytime soon, CNN reported.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has set forth the conditions for resolving the situation in Ukraine, which included Ukraine withdrawing troops from Donbass and Novorossia and abandoning plans to join NATO. In addition, Moscow insists that all Western sanctions be lifted and Ukraine’s non-bloc and non-nuclear status be guaranteed.
