Hainan will take measures to further improve air quality by 2030

Authorities plan to strengthen air pollution control and preventive measures in every city and county in the province, tighten controls on businesses and modernize the transport sector

HAIKOU /China/, April 8. /TASS/. Authorities in the southern Chinese province of Hainan intend to take measures to further improve air quality. According to the Hainan International Communication Network (HICN), the average concentration of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5), the main source of smog, in the air of the province should be reduced to single digits by 2030, while the maximum acceptable standard of the WHO is 25 micrograms per cubic meter.

Last year the average concentration of PM 2.5 in the region's atmosphere was 13 micrograms per cubic meter, far below the WHO standard and the national average, the report said. But Hainan has set its own target and intends to reduce the figure to 11 micrograms per cubic meter by the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), and by 2030 to bring the value to single digits.

To achieve the goal, the government plans to strengthen air pollution control and preventive measures in each city and county in the province, strengthen control over enterprises, modernize the transport sector and promote the reduction of exhaust fumes, according to the network.

Hainan pays special attention to environmental protection and pollution control. It is the first province in China to announce plans to completely stop the sale of cars with gasoline and diesel engines by 2030 in order to combat pollution and protect nature. To this end, the government is encouraging people to buy alternative energy cars and to develop the necessary infrastructure for them. The province also has a policy of subsidizing the purchase of such vehicles by individuals.

Last year, the average concentration of PM 2.5 in China's air was 30 micrograms per cubic meter. In 2020, the figure was 33 µg per cubic meter.
