Russia calls for peace in Sudan without external interference — ambassador

Andrey Chernovol said that Russia had always advocated for Sudan where the people themselves could determine their own destiny, without external dictates

MOSCOW, October 30. /TASS/. Russia advocates for a swift end to the conflict in Sudan through peaceful means and without interference from foreign states, Russian Ambassador to Sudan Andrey Chernovol said.

"We hope that the conflict in Sudan will soon be resolved peacefully, through an intra-Sudanese national dialogue, by the people of Sudan and their representatives on Sudanese soil, without outside interference," the diplomat noted during a formal ceremony to present the regalia of an honorary doctorate from the Russian State Humanitarian University to Chairman of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

"Russia has always advocated and continues to advocate for a united Sudan, in which the people themselves determine their own destiny, without external dictates. This is also a very important point, which is reinforced by our very strong ties and political coordination in bilateral forums, primarily at the UN, but not exclusively there," the ambassador pointed out. "And we are grateful to the Sudanese side for its unwavering support of the Russian Federation on all issues that serve our mutual interests and are key for both Sudan and Russia."

Chernovol also reported that this year, Russian-Sudanese trade volume has returned to pre-war levels. "I would even say it has reached pre-2020 levels. According to various estimates, it ranges from $500 million to $800 million," he specified.

The armed conflict in Sudan began in April 2023 due to disagreements between the chairman of the Sovereignty Council of Sudan and army commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the head of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. The clashes, which began in Khartoum, quickly spread to other parts of the country.
