Lietuvos gelezinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways) has named the volumes of cargo, which will be allowed for transportation between mainland Russia and the Kaliningrad region, Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea, in 2023, taking into account the sanctions policy of the European Union. The LTG Cargo company, which is a division of the Lithuanian Railways announced this on Monday.

"This year it is allowed to transport 2.47 million tons of cargo, from the Russian Federation [in transit through Lithuania] to the Kaliningrad region and 420,000 tons in the opposite direction," the report says.

Coal and products of the coal industry (710,000 tons) iron and steel (520,000 tons) account for the largest share in transportation to the westernmost region of Russia. In the opposite direction, it is mainly planned to carry timber and its products (410,000 tons).

In the summer of 2022, the overland transit of a number of goods to the Kaliningrad region through Lithuania was suspended. The ban on transportation included types of goods that were included in the EU sanctions lists against Russia. Then transit was restored by rail, however, quotas were introduced for sanctioned goods, which should not exceed the average imports of similar goods into the Russian region over the past three years. Restrictions on road transport are fully maintained.
