Russia and EU officials to discuss Baltic grid exit from Russia energy system in January

Earlier it was reported that Russia could demand millions of euros from Estonia for regulating the frequency in the networks over expected grid of the Baltic states from the energy ring in 2025

MOSCOW, December 27. /TASS/. Russia’s Energy Minister Alexander Novak and Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of Energy Union Maros Sefcovic will discuss the withdrawal of the Baltic states’ energy grid from the energy system of Russia and Belarus at a meeting in early January 2019, and official with the Energy Ministry’s press service told TASS.

"The disconnection of the energy systems of the Baltic states from synchronous operation with Russian and Belarusian networks will be discussed at a meeting of Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak with Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of Energy Union Maros Sefcovic in Brussels in early 2019," the official said.

The official stressed that the ministry is in favor of continuing the constructive interaction of the countries participating in the BRELL energy ring (Belarus, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania).

Earlier, media reported that Russia could demand a few tens of millions of euros from Estonia for regulating the frequency in the networks in connection with the expected withdrawal of the Baltic states from the energy ring in 2025.

"There were no negotiations with Estonia on possible payment for the frequency maintenance service," Russia’s Energy Ministry reported.

European countries have repeatedly stated their intention to withdraw from BRELL and stop the supply of electricity to the Kaliningrad region (Russia’s Western enclave on the Baltic Sea - TASS), and from it. Testing of the power system of the Kaliningrad region in an isolated mode will be held in May 2019 after the completion of the construction of four new thermal power plants.
