Dollar surges above 67-ruble mark for first time since August 2016

Despite the weakening of the ruble against the dollar, the euro exchange rate declined to 76.88 rubles

MOSCOW, August 10. /TASS/. The dollar rose by 44 kopecks to 67.09 rubles on the Moscow Exchange on Friday.

The last time the dollar surpassed 67 rubles on August 3, 2016.

Despite the weakening of the ruble against the dollar, the euro exchange rate declined 6 kopecks to 76.88 rubles.

At the same time, the ruble-denominated MOEX Russia Index (previously MICEX) fell by 1.2% to 2,281.93 points as Friday trading opened on the Moscow Exchange. The dollar-denominated RTS lost 2.3% and reached 1,072.48 points.

Price of Brent futures contract with October delivery on London’s ICE fell by 0.74% to $71.54 per barrel.

On Thursday, shares of Russian companies also declined after the news about the US plans to introduce new sanctions against the Russian Federation. In particular, the Washington administration announced new sanctions for August 22 against Russia over the alleged involvement in the poisoning of Sergey Skripal and his daughter in British Salisbury. Russia has repeatedly categorically denied involvement in the incident.
