Putin's proposal on external governance of Ukraine would 'save' country — Medvedchuk

Viktor Medvedchuk said that Vladimir Zelensky "will not approve of this decision, but it is equally clear that neither Russia nor the United States should pay any attention to this"

MOSCOW, March 31. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal to introduce temporary international governance in Ukraine under the auspices of the United Nations offers a real solution for saving the country and its people, said Viktor Medvedchuk, the leader of the Other Ukraine movement and former head of the banned Opposition Platform - For Life party in Ukraine.

"The proposal of the President of the Russian Federation to introduce temporary international governance in Ukraine under the auspices of the United Nations is a realistic mechanism for saving the Ukrainian people and restoring peace and stability. It is clear that [Vladimir] Zelensky will not approve of this decision, but it is equally clear that neither Russia nor the United States should pay any attention to this. Let's be honest, this will allow us to implement what Zelensky's government promised in the 2019 elections, and then it was supported by voters," he wrote in a column he contributed to the Smotrim.ru media platform.

Putin said earlier that international practice suggests the possibility of introducing external governance in Ukraine, paving the way for legitimate negotiations on a Ukrainian settlement. He recalled that similar UN-backed governing systems had been previously implemented in East Timor, New Guinea, and parts of the former Yugoslavia. Putin noted that introduction of an interim administration in Ukraine could be discussed under the auspices of the United Nations with the United States, European countries, as well as partners and friends of Russia.
