WASHINGTON, March 21. /TASS/. Egypt and Qatar, which earlier mediated a ceasefire agreement between Israel and the radical Palestinian movement Hamas, are making efforts to restore the deal undermined by Israeli strikes on Gaza on March 18, The Washington Post wrote, citing sources.
Cairo and Doha are pushing the two sides to agree to an emergency ceasefire, as the Palestinian death toll from renewed Israeli strikes surpassed 500 in recent days, the newspaper wrote, adding that Egyptian mediators have already presented a new proposal to Hamas.
Egypt contacted Washington as soon as Israel resumed strikes in Gaza but did not get a response, the paper noted, citing sources. US President Donald Trump, in turn, has backed Israel's military operation in the enclave, a move Israel said it made to pressure Hamas to release more Israeli hostages.
Attempts by Egypt and Qatar to persuade Israel to stop fighting will be effective only if the US puts pressure on Israel to cease its attacks. Otherwise, the conflict would probably continue, the newspaper said.
According to experts, the strikes could also be interpreted as Israel signaling that it is no longer interested in negotiations, the paper wrote. Furthermore, the elimination of the Hamas officials responsible for hostage negotiations may result in a "fragmented" government and the captives not being released at all.
On March 18, the Israel Defense Forces reported widespread strikes on Hamas strongholds in the Gaza Strip. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said that Israel had resumed military operations in Gaza after Hamas rejected the US proposals put forward by mediators and US Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff. The office stated that the Israeli military had resumed strikes on Hamas targets in Gaza to secure the release of hostages and that the army would escalate its campaign in the enclave. The radicals have blamed the United States for the renewal of Israeli aggression.
According to the latest figures from the Gaza Health Ministry, the number of people killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza has reached 590, and over 1,000 others have been injured.
