Moldovan socialists request clarification on US support for Sandu — ex-president

"With American funds, the Party of Action and Solidarity and Maia Sandu manipulated public opinion in Moldova, introduced censorship, and undermined freedom of expression," Igor Dodon emphasized

CHISINAU, February 17. /TASS/. The Moldovan opposition has sent a letter to the US embassy requesting clarification on the extent of involvement of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Soros-linked organizations in supporting Moldova's ruling political party and incumbent President Maia Sandu, former Moldovan President Igor Dodon stated.

"[The Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova] sent an official letter to the US Embassy to clarify the level of involvement of non-governmental organizations linked to George Soros and USAID structures in backing the supporters of the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity. People are eager to understand who specifically received the funds, how they were used, what political connections these fund recipients have, and, more importantly, when the relevant US and Moldovan authorities will audit the funds managed by these supporters," the leader of the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova wrote on his Telegram channel.

"With American funds, the Party of Action and Solidarity and Maia Sandu manipulated public opinion in Moldova, introduced censorship, and undermined freedom of expression," Dodon emphasized. "Who will be held accountable politically and legally? We hope the US embassy will clarify this matter," Dodon added.

Earlier, the former Moldovan president endorsed the US authorities' decision to cancel the allocation of $22 million for Moldovan electoral processes and stated that parliament should pass a law on foreign agents, following Georgia’s example, thereby prohibiting foreign-funded non-governmental organizations from interfering in the country’s politics.
