Lebanese army enters southern town of Et Taibe after Israel pulls out forces

According to the ceasefire agreement that was extended from January 27 to February 18, the Shia groups must leave southern Lebanon and move beyond the Litani River

BEIRUT, February 4. /TASS/. Lebanese servicemen have taken up positions in the southern town of Et Taibe after Israel withdrew its forces from the area in accordance with the ceasefire agreement, the army press service said.

"The town has come under full control of the Lebanese armed forces, which will ensure the safe return of the civilians to their homes," the press service said in a statement posted on its X page. According to it, this is the 20th settlement near the border with Israel reclaimed by the Lebanese army since January 26.

According to the ceasefire agreement that was extended from January 27 to February 18, the Shia groups must leave southern Lebanon and move beyond the Litani River. The document stipulates the deployment of the Lebanese army along the entire southern border with the support of UN peacekeepers and the Israeli troops’ withdrawal from Lebanese territory.

Complaint to UN Security Council

On Tuesday, the Lebanese Foreign Ministry sent a complaint to the UN Security Council regarding the actions of Israeli servicemen who blew up civilian houses before leaving.

The ministry pointed out that Israeli servicemen from time to time open fire on columns of displaced people who are returning back to the southern settlements. "Israel continues to violate the ceasefire, which has led to the death of 24 people and the injury of over 240 at the end of January," the document said.

"We demand that the UN Security Council take a clear position on these actions and force Israel to comply with its obligations," the statement stressed. The Foreign Ministry called on the international community to step up support for the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers "to ensure the protection of Israel’s sovereignty and the security of its citizens.".
