BEIRUT, December 6. /TASS/. Kurdish units of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have taken western parts of Syria’s Deir ez-Zor governorate and areas near the border with Iraq, which were controlled by government troops, the Erbil-based Rudaw television channel said, citing the SDF command.
According to the SDF command, this decision was made after government forces and National Defense Forces (NDF), which support them, withdrew from the cities of Dei ez-Zor, Mayadin, and Albu Kamal on the border with Iraq. Syrian troops and NDF militias redeployed to Palmyra, which is a target of attacks by units of the al-Nusra extremist group (outlawed in Russia) and pro-Turkish Syrian armed opposition groups.
The Firat agency earlier quoted SDF commander Mazloum Abdi as saying that Islamic State (terrorist group outlawed in Russia) militants had invigorated their activities in some areas of the Syrian Desert.
Apart from that, Kurdish units are engaged in fighting near the city of Aleppo in northern Syria. According to Abdi, talks are underway to evacuate 250,000 people from Aleppo’s besieged Kurdish quarters.
