SUKHUM, February 21. /TASS/. Security on the border between Abkhazia and Georgia is firmly ensured, small incidents are not critical, Abkhazian President Aslan Bzhania told TASS in an interview assessing the situation on the border.
"Abkhazia's border security is ensured by the border services of the Republic of Abkhazia and Russia, security is firmly ensured. There are small incidents on the border, but they are not critical, the efforts made by the Abkhazian and Russian sides raise the level of border security to the necessary marks every year. Everything started in 2008, when Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and we have already built the necessary border to ensure our security on a common contractual basis. So, I think that in this direction we are firmly and reliably protected," said Bzhania.
Assessing the possibility of relations between Georgia and Abkhazia given political changes in the neighboring state, the Abkhazian president noted that in the last few years, when the special military operation in Ukraine began, the leaders of Georgia "showed a pragmatic approach to everything." "They did not get involved in the provocation imposed on them by Ukraine. Repeated calls by Ukraine's leader to open a second front did not find their support. In this sense, I believe that this is such a sign of political maturity, and in the future, if they show pragmatism in Georgia, it can exclude unnecessary incidents," he said.
"We have decided with our future, the Georgian leadership will have to recognize the existing reality. <...> Today there is an independent Abkhazia, the independence of which is supported by the leadership and people of Russia. We have our own way of development and we are following it. At the same time, we are interested in good-neighborly relations with Georgia," the President of Abkhazia emphasized.
