Yerevan believes negotiations with Baku should continue through Western-sponsored venues

Referring to Azerbaijan’s proposal to start direct negotiations, Sargis Khandanyan noted that Armenia appreciates the consolidation of earlier agreed principles within the framework of the future peace treaty

YEREVAN, January 10. /TASS/. The Armenian side believes that negotiations with Azerbaijan should continue on Western-sponsored planforms as they previously were, Sargis Khandanyan, chair of the Armenian Parliament’s Standing Committee on Foreign Relations, said at a briefing.

"It is very important for us to act within established negotiation formats. You are aware of Washington’s foreign ministers’ meeting format that has been created, as well as the format of negotiations between the countries’ leaders under the EU’s mediation. These formats contribute to the negotiations’ legitimacy," he noted.

Referring to Azerbaijan’s proposal to start direct negotiations, Khandanyan noted that Armenia appreciates the consolidation of earlier agreed principles within the framework of the future peace treaty. The senior parliamentarian added that Yerevan insists on opening roads and other communications infrastructure in the disputed regions with full consideration for the sovereignty and jurisdiction of all countries concerned. However, Armenia is ready to grant some privileges in the transportation of goods, vehicles and people.
