Germany meets new challenges with long-term deployment of brigade in Lithuania — Scholz

The German chancellor assured that in the coming years, as it was previously announced, Berlin will meet the NATO target of spending 2% of GDP on defense

BERLIN, November 9. /TASS/. Germany is responding to the changing security situation with the ‘long-term deployment’ of a military brigade in Lithuania, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said.

Scholz pointed out that what is happening in Ukraine has changed the security situation. "The permanent answer to this new challenge is to strengthen our common defense and deterrence capabilities," Scholz said at a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Berlin. "I am grateful to the Bundeswehr (the German armed forces - TASS) for rising to these challenges so quickly. It also means going beyond the usual, such as the long-term deployment of a [Bundeswehr] brigade in Lithuania or larger military formations that will be on high alert in the future," the German prime minister pointed out.

At the same time, Scholz noted that the Bundeswehr needs financial resources. He assured that in the coming years, as it was previously announced, Germany will meet the NATO target of spending 2% of GDP on defense.

On November 8, Lithuanian Defense Minister Arvydas Anusauskas told reporters that the number of Bundeswehr troops in the country will exceed 5,000.
