US presidential election to impact situation in Ukraine — Hungarian PM

The Hungarian government has repeatedly stated that talks would be needed to settle the Ukrainian conflict, not only between Ukraine and Russia, but also between Russia and the US

BUDAPEST, March 10. /TASS/. The outcome of the 2024 presidential election in the United States may impact the situation in Ukraine if the conflict in that country continues for a couple of years, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Friday.

Ukraine, in his words, can continue combat operations as long as the United States is saying "yes," and only when it says "no" will a ceasefire become possible. "[Former US President Donald] Trump, who plans to run for president again, wants a ceasefire," Orban said in an interview with the Kossuth radio station. That is why the US elections in 2024 may directly influence the situation surrounding Ukraine, he explained. "It may even influence the outcome of the war," he stressed.

According to the Hungarian prime minister, while the United States had played a less active role in attempting to shape European policies in recent years, the situation has changed since the armed conflict in Ukraine broke out and the US has taken the lead as head of the "war coalition" backing Ukraine.

The Hungarian government has repeatedly stated that talks would be needed to settle the Ukrainian conflict, not only between Ukraine and Russia, but also between Russia and the United States, given Washington’s role as Kiev’s primary political and military supporter.
