MOSCOW, March 21. /TASS/. The world lost about 420 million hectares of forest since 1990, which can be compared to half of the Chinese territory, head of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Russia Office Vladimir Moshkalo said at a press conference in TASS on the International Day of Forests.
"Deforestation continues at present at a rapid pace. According to data from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the world lost 420 million hectares of forests. "This area is roughly equal to a half of the area of the People’s Republic of China," Moshkalo said.
The deforestation rate from 2015 to 2020 was about ten million hectares per year, he noted. "This was largely related to cuttings alone. And it is approximately equal to, say, the area of Portugal," Moshkalo added.
