Court fines Google $43,667 for failing to limit access to banned content

In February 2021, the law on self-control of social networks came into effect in Russia

MOSCOW, March 13. /TASS/. The Tagansky Court in Moscow fined Google 4 million rubles ($43,667) for failure to fulfill its obligations to limit access to prohibited information, a court official told TASS.

"Google LLC. was found guilty of committing an administrative offense under Part 2 of Article 13.50 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation (failure by the owner of a social network to fulfill the obligation to monitor and (or) take measures to limit access to information), he was sentenced to an administrative fine in the amount of 4 million rubles," the official said.

In February 2021, the law on self-control of social networks came into effect in Russia. The law obliges platforms to independently identify and block illegal content. In 2023, amendments to the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation were adopted, according to which social networks face fines of up to 8 million rubles ($87,322) for non-compliance with the requirements of this law.
