BAKU, March 17. /TASS/. Russian Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to discuss a wide range of issues on the bilateral agenda, the Federation Council's press service reported.
"In the course of a candid, lengthy conversation, the sides covered a wide range of issues on the bilateral agenda. They discussed growth of trade-economic cooperation and deepening of cultural ties," the message reads.
Matviyenko also noted that Russia's President Vladimir Putin and Azerbaijan's leader Ilham Aliyev are in regular contact and thanked them for the attention they pay to inter-parliamentary and interregional cooperation, which are important components of interstate relations. In addition, the parties discussed the current international situation.
Matviyenko met with Aliyev during the official visit of the Russian delegation of senators to Baku. As part of the visit, the Russian delegation laid flowers at the tomb of Azerbaijan's national leader Heydar Aliyev. A wreath-laying ceremony was also held at the Eternal Flame memorial.
